Overall View

Well this is it, my last post. Although it is sad to see this journey come to an end, I'm excited to see many more things to come. During this research project I can safely say I learned a lot and my perspective on fashion changed.

I never fully understood how the whole "trend" thing triggered bullying and judging. Or how "trends" even begun in the first place, but after weeks and weeks of blog postings and researching I learned that past fashion trends can influence our society, I also learned that the reason as to why these so called "trends" start becoming trends is because our society is controlled. By this I mean that we conform. When we see someone wearing or doing something cool, we get influenced to try it out. We are followers and I obviously did know that way before doing this research project but the more I looked into it the more I understood it. Even though there wasn't much information I could work with, the small amount of information I found interested me a lot and made me think about how awful our society is.

It was nice logging on every week and giving you guys engaging information on this topic. I hope you all enjoyed it!

Wiki

After weeks of several blog postings, I know we can all agree that we learned many things about life, our society and people in general. It was a great experience to blog about something that interests me. Even though I had mixed feelings about this project, I learned to look at it in the positive side and my feelings toward it changed. I hope you all enjoyed my blog as well as I enjoyed providing you guys with things to read.

For this blog post I wanted to introduce you guys to my wiki, Fashion. This wiki will provide you with much more information about fashion and our society as well as many other interesting facts about fashion. I wanted my wiki to interest you just like my blog did. In my wiki you will be able to find pictures, and postings.

I suggest you give it a visit, you wont regret it!

Fashion is art

Fashion is a type of art that can be researched for a long amount of time. You will never fully understand what fashion is. The way we dress impacts our lives in some way. The way we dress at home is not the way we would dress in other places. The things we wear at home wont cause any debating or bullying since no one will be there to see what you are wearing.
"When we dress up and go out to public places, it becomes an issue. Why? That’s because the way we dress affects ourselves and other people." I agree with this quote presented in the article because the way you dress creates immediate opinions of who you are to others without really knowing you.
According to Dan Ariely, us humans have a pattern of irrational behaviors. One behavior is known as effect of expectation. This behavior means that when a person believes that something is good without even trying it out, they will perceive this as generally being good. Fashion is a way for us to advertise ourselves. When you're meeting someone for the first time, looks are very important because they are a part of someones first impression.
Even though people want to dress comfortably and in their own way, its clear that people will judge. Reality is harsh and there are some cases where you have to dress to impress. For example, in a job interview it is always best to try and impress the interviewer, one way of doing so is by how you present yourself.
In other words, I think that fashion is a way of showing who you are, a person can dress in any way they would like. It is their life and no one else's but in some circumstances it is best to dress in an acceptable way because you never know what one little change in style can do.

My second blog post for this week is about Social behavior in relation to society. Society takes a big part in fashion because most of the "fashion" we know of becomes a "trend" by conformity. "The average person seeks to be a follower rather than a leader", Floyd H. Allport states. I agree with this statement because people in our society believe in conformity. There's conformity all over the world. Fashion and other popular interests in the world are so highly critiqued that it can affect social behavior in many ways. Much of today's trends are used as a way to drive attention and show off.

In my last blog post, I talked about how females are more into fashion to attract the opposite sex, in this book Allport talks about how females use today's trends to arouse the opposite sex. Therefore, I agree that us women depend on our looks to attract males. In this society, we don't really depend on personalities anymore.

This week I decided to look more into the psychology of fashion, I found an engaging article written by Marina V. She states that "Females are known to be the more visually appealing gender while males are more easily visually stimulated when it comes to attraction." Because of that theory Marina suggests that appearance is an important factor for females to find their sole mate. That is a big part in why so many females are so dedicated to fashion. Marina also states that people like to conform with fashion, she believes that people want to belong and want to be known by fashion.
Even though fashion unites us, style is what makes us unique. Style is what makes us different from everyone else. Some change their sense of style and some don't. The people that accept change usually want to be a part of society but not such a huge part that they also add a little twist of their style to the new "trend".
I think that taking a risk when it comes to trying new fashion trends, can really show the type of person you are. When it comes to shopping I like looking for new ideas but I don't make such drastic changes because I won't feel comfortable with it.
Many people are scared to take risks with clothes because they are scared of how people will see them. I know many people that are really self conscious with what they wear because now a days people judge a person by their appearance.

Fashion: A Philosophy by Lars Svendsen, is the book I chose for this weeks blog post. This book had many interesting topics. One that caught my attention was the philosophy on how advertisement made fashion so popular on the eighteenth century. Fashion seemed to be a very important role since plenty of fashion shows were always broadcasted in various local tv channels. According to Svendsen, fashion was very eye catching especially with all the attention it received.

Fashion is indeed directed towards both, male and female, but in the eighteenth century it was common for people to see women have more interests on fashion than men. Svendsen mentioned that fashion affects the attitude of most people towards themselves aswell as others. In the book, Svendsen argues that people deny the fact that they're attitude is affected by fashion.

I however disagree, I think that people know for a fact that they're way of being is affected by what they wear. Some people disguise themselves with what they wear. For instance, some girls look like they're wearing nothing, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are easy. Guys assume that just because a girl dresses provocative it means they can get in her pants, when its not always like that. Obviously that particular girl is changing her attitude and her way of being the way she dresses, she's not doing it on purpose, that is just her style and her way of dressing.

"Fashion Bullies"

Everyone knows that bullying is sometimes started with a persons appearance. Their appearance is usually shown with their wardrobe. For this weeks blog I found an article that talked about fashion bullies.
The article states that since bullying has become a huge controversy, many schools and community programs are focusing more on girl-on-girl bullying. They are addressing peer pressure between the girls and what their clothing plays on their identity. They also say that "teen and adolescent girls have long used fashion as a social weapon".
Dorothy Espelage, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois, says there was an increase in bullying because of clothes, she thinks the reason for that is because of designer brands and because of the labels in the clothing ads. "Having the ability to afford designer clothing gives some kids the opportunity to become popular, that protects them and gives them social power and leverage over others" says Espelage. In this case, I agree with Dorothy because clothing does make an expression, but that doesn't always mean its correct. For instance, if someone likes dressing comfortable in sweats and an oversized t-shirt to school it doesn't mean that that person is cheap and has no class.
People don't really take the time to get to know the person behind the clothes and behind the makeup, people are just lazy and expect to judge them with how they appear on the outside. That causes many problems and bullying can be involved.
